Helping People in Wheelchairs to Stand

Not everybody knows that Ability Bow has a Standing Frame for wheelchair users. We have had it for a few months now after it was donated by a gym member who didn’t have the room for it at home. The frame actually belongs to Tower Hamlets NHS and we work in partnership with physiotherapists to induct new users and help support people to use it here in the gym.

Do you use a wheelchair and want to know more about the benefits of assisted standing, using the Standing Frame?

A lot of people who are in wheelchairs for much of the time would get many benefits from it. Some of the many benefits can be:

  • Improvement in range of movement
  • Reduction in spasticity
  • Prevention or reversal of osteoporosis
  • Improvement of renal function
  • Prevention of pressure ulcers
  • Improvement in circulation
  • Normalisation of respiratory function

These are just a few of the possible improvements from using the Standing Frame. We hope too that our Hackney members will soon be able to use the frame, and we are very keen to make that happen.

At the moment we are only able to take Standing Frame referrals from Tower Hamlets, but our physio partners in both boroughs are discussing the way forward and we will keep you posted. To use the standing frame you need to be assessed by your physiotherapist first.
