Joe is 81 years old and was referred to Ability Bow gym 6 years ago after a Stroke.
He is still exercising today so we asked Joe to describe why regular gym exercise became so important to him, and we brought out his old testimonial too:
“Since joining the gym I have found my mobility has improved greatly after having my stroke. Also, mentally I’m more aware of my ability. I’ve met some lovely people in the same position as myself who have a positive outlook on life now, due to encouragement from staff and each other.”
“Because of the exercise I do at the gym twice a week, I get about a lot easier. If I didn’t come to Ability Bow I would just sit about at home and my legs and arms would get worse. It helps my mobility and I need less help from my wife – I can shave myself now and I get around indoors without help. It’s important to me that I can go to the toilet on my own, you know, as you should.
I do still have falls sometimes, but because of the exercise I am strong enough to get back up again, and you’ve got to laugh really.
Being strong is important because it keeps me able to get around. I can get to family parties, weddings and funerals, and I can keep in touch with my family that way. I think if I lost my strength and mobility I would lose touch with some members of my family which would be sad.
Another important thing about coming to the gym is that it encourages me to talk to other gym members, which really helps with my speech. There is always a lot to talk and laugh about in the gym.”
